We have all heard about super-foods and how they are good for us. You probably wonder what classifies as a “super food” for dogs?

These are certain dog approved foods that have a minimum amount of calories with a maximum amount of nutrients. These foods that can be shared between humans and dogs because they are nutritionally dense packing plenty of healthful benefits into a single serving.

They help people, as well as their pets, fight disease, maintain good health, keep joints pain free and boost heart and immune health as well as boosting energy levels. They are the perfect addition to your dog’s diet, regardless of whether you feed your dog home-cooked meals or packaged dog foods. When you add nutritionally-packed extras to your dog’s diet in an effort to compliment his eating regime, you can improve his or her overall health.

When introducing these foods, you should do so gradually in proper sized proportions. Check with your veterinarian to see if your dog has any dietary concerns or concerns regarding his or her health. 1.Kale

A leafy vegetable filled with antioxidants and vitamins such as A, C, and E, it can help the liver detoxify the body and provides anti-inflammatory properties. While this is a great food, do not use it for pets who suffer from kidney disease or bladder stones.

2.Carrots

These make great snacks for dogs because they are naturally sweet, crunchy and a favorite of dogs. They have vitamins C and K which are great for blood clotting, potassium, carotenoids and fiber. In addition, carrots have most of the B vitamins, phosphorus, magnesium, and manganese, which boost energy production.

3.Pumpkins

Pumpkin is great for maintaining a healthy digestive tract and is low in sodium. It is a low-calorie, high soluble fiber and high in carotenoids, potassium and vitamin C. Don’t use the pie filling or canned products with spices or sugar added. Instead, get the canned organic pumpkin for your pets.

4.Sweet Potatoes

Boasting more than 150{338b708083e8ec370eae7bda85bcccba785a84a9f72304506f2b3b2ea06ff2a5} more antioxidants than blueberries and filled with beta-carotene. These are great in keeping immune systems strong because they packed with vitamin C and they are also filled with vitamin A that is great for heart health.

5.Fish

Salmon, herring, mackerel, anchovies, and sardines are filled with omega-3 fatty acids which are great for coat, skin and brain. This is also beneficial in limiting the inflammatory issues that lead to chronic health conditions in canines as well as arthritic issues that cause pain. Offering essential vitamins, minerals and excellent protein sources, they are very beneficial on many levels.

6.Seawood/Nori

Seaweed is offered in Asian food departments and is filled with protein, zinc, copper, vitamins C, F and galactans. This is believed to offer beneficial effects on preventing tumors, improving immune function and improving metabolism.

7.Quinoa

A seed that is related to spinach, this is often referred to as a grain and is gluten free. It has all eight essential amino acids and is a good source of phosphorus, folate, iron, magnesium, fiber, and phytochemicals. It is a potent antioxidant that reduces the odds of acquiring diabetes.

8.Chia

These are seeds from a traditional grain that has several of the same benefits of flax, but they don’t require grinding. These seeds include protein, calcium, antioxidants, omega fatty acids, fiber, and calcium. Just sprinkle a few seeds on your dog’s meal.

9.Probotics – Unsweetened natural Yogurt

Probiotics, which are active cultures that are friendly bacteria, will help keep bad bacteria away. Containing a variety of nutrients, including vitamin B12, phosphorus, calcium, riboflavin, iodine, zinc, pantothenic acid, and protein, yogurt can improve gut function and aids with energy production and enzyme action.

NOTE: stay away from pasteurized yogurt. Most yogurt has been pasteurized which kills the naturally occurring probiotics. Try to also avoid yogurt that has added sugar. Most brands add sugar because the American public will not eat it if it is not sweet- but this can cause more harm than good for your dog.

10.Blueberries

Blueberries are filled with phytochemicals, antioxidants, vitamins C and E, fiber and manganese. This should be introduced slowly because it can adversely impact bowel movements in humans and dogs. These make great dog treats.

11.Brussel Sprouts

A total favorite of our Golden Doodle Thomas- we use them for treats or mix in his food with Juverin!

There are several other fresh, simple food items that are wholesome that can benefit humans and canines. Other items include apples, cranberries, bananas, organic eggs, livers, hearts, pumpkin seeds, wild venison, duck, lamb, wild rabbit, natural grass fed beef and more.
