Dogs have always been man’s best friend. Dogs make for great companions, guards, and in some cases help with day to day life. But not all dog breeds are born equal. Dogs have varying temperaments, and it’s better to choose an appropriate breed to complement your own personality and lifestyle. Some dogs are satisfied with being left alone for hours on end, while more active dogs need constant attention.

Choosing the appropriate dog breed for your family is very important. There are plenty of dogs that work well with kids. A good, loyal dog can also protect your kids and keep them entertained while you’re busy with work. Dogs can also teach kids discipline and make for great companions. Featured below are the top 6 best dog breeds for your family.

Bulldogs

Bulldogs start out as energetic puppies but mellow out as they get older. This makes them perfect for kids. Bulldogs are also very affectionate and gentle. Despite this, they still make excellent guard dogs. Bulldogs are also surprisingly observant. They are capable of noticing if something is wrong and will often react appropriately.

Collie

The fluffy Collie is an intelligent and affectionate dog. Their intelligence makes them highly predictable, making them a blast to train. Collies pay particular attention to children and will sometimes even hilariously attempt to herd them around while playing. While Collies lack the aggression of larger breeds, they can still make excellent guard dogs because of their alert nature.

Bull Terrier

Bull Terriers are great playmates because of just how sturdy they are. They are not easily injured from rough play. Bull Terriers are muscular, playful, and affectionate creatures. They are also obedient and easy to train. Thanks to their short coats, Bull Terriers are also fairly low maintenance; however they do require constant exercise. You don’t even need a large, open yard if you want to get a Bull Terrier. They are fine with small spaces and will even have no problem adjusting to life in an apartment.

Boxers

In contrast to bulldogs, boxers are energetic and people-oriented. They are hyperactive and affectionate, making them the perfect playmates for active children. Do note that boxers need playful interaction and constant exercise.

Bichon Frise

One of the cuter dogs on this list, the Bichon Frise is a breed of small, white, fluffy dogs that is sure to put a smile on your kids’ faces. Their fluffy and happy nature makes them excellent companions for children of all ages. Despite all their great perks, Bichon Frise need to be constantly reminded that you’re the boss. They are prone to Small Dog Syndrome and can easily become snappy or disobedient if not given enough attention.

Beagles

Beagles are great with kids because of their kind and gentle disposition. This breed is active and requires regular exercise, making them ideal for younger children. Be very careful with their food intake though, as the breed is prone to obesity. Beagles are also easy to take care of, because they don’t drool and shed as much as other breeds.

Labrador Retrievers

Labradors love activity, making them excellent playmates. They are smart, loving, and best of all are easy to train. Take note though that taking care of Labrador Retrievers will require a bit of effort from your part. You’ll need to teach your kids how to properly handle Labradors and vice-versa. You may also need to train Labradors to be friendlier toward smaller dogs and pets you may have around in your house.
